• Share your ideas for future DWN event Helen Baggott: Research & Rights (10.30am) Helen is a freelance writer and editor from Sturminster Newton. Beginning with examples from her own writing, Helen will provide research ideas and tips – and make sure you stay on the right side of the copyright laws. Her client base covers fiction and non-fiction and she will draw on her years of experience to help you develop your own writing and make it as credible as possible.
• Are you writing your family’s story? Who owns the copyright to the photographs you want to use?
Do you write historical fiction? Where can you access information that adds colour to your plot?
• Committing a murder (in a novel!)? Just how believable is your police procedure? Kathy Sharp: A Different Way to Enjoy your Writing (11.45am) After publication of her fourth book, Kathy Sharp took a step back from worrying about selling books to focus on her real love, the practice of writing. She discovered an interest in illustration and bookbinding, and developed new skills in writing, illustrating, printing and binding handmade books. In this presentation, Kathy will talk through the process of making books by hand and the pleasure and enjoyment that can be gained from going back to basics. Publication doesn’t have to be the sole target for a writer. You CAN just write and love it and see where it takes you. Participants will gain from the presentation:
• ideas for creating handmade books
• an understanding of how to approach the task
• appreciation of the process
Tours of the Corn Exchange will be available during the morning
